-Letter of 16 March 1649 (from Florence to Leiden): "Prolixior ad tuas responsum parabam cum alias ab Illustrissimo Gaddi accepi, eodemque tempore certior factus sum mercatorem Amstelodamensem tandem prossimis literis Ascanio Samminiati et Nicolao Guasconi iussisse ut pretium nummorum antiquorum quotiescumq. peterent solverent. quod cum Cl. V. Andreae Cavalcanti mihiq. hodie mane fuerit significatum temporis angustia coacti nummos recognoscere, et \denuo/ expendere minime potuimus quod absq. dubio in crastinum aut alterum diem ad summum differetur, et omnia uti monuisti concinnabimus ut ad te quam primum sanctafecta perveniant, et ijsdem Samminiati et Guasconi commendabimus, quorum opera et diligentia maxime confidimus. Interim ne anxius animi per hoc temporis, etiam exigui viveres, haec (?) raptim ad te una scripsimus cui a bonorum omnium latore omnia fausta et felicia precamur. proximis literis factum sit adamussim cognosces." (I was preparing a fuller reply to your letter when I received another from the most illustrious Gaddi, and at the same time I was informed that the Amsterdam merchant had at last instructed in his latest letter to Ascanio Samminiati and Niccolo Guasconi that they should pay the price of the ancient coins as soon as they were asked. It was then reported to Andrea Cavalacanti and me early today that they were forced by the shortness of time to take possession of the coins again, and once again we were not able to pay. This will be delayed until certainly tomorrow or another day at most, and we will do everything, as you have urged, so that they shall come in perfect condition to you as soon as possible, and we will hand them over to the said Samminiati and Guasconi, in whose efforts and diligence we have great confidence. We immediately wrote this to you, for whom we pray from the bringer of all good things that all will be favourable and successful.
