Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

Lettre du 26 décembre 1729 (de Messine): Abstract: A friendly rather charming letter congratulating him on his safe return to his native land, after his adventures, and expressing particularly the pleasure he anticipates from O’s. account of his sojourn in Sicily which he himself knows very thoroughly, and the prospect thus of enjoying in O’s. company happy recollections and learning much that is new to him; much of it hitherto buried in obscurity. So he bids him hasten with the publication. He gives news of the small body of English people here - Mr. and Mrs. Hampson; the consul, Mr. Crawley, who is always close by and pursues extensions of his already plentiful collection of medals. He thanks him for the present of Rhine wine, which lacks however the sparkle of champagne in which they drank together in O’s. good company. (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS D’Orville 487, f° 120-121).
