-Lettre du 18 juillet 1685 (de ?): He and his family have been very ill. Chancellor of France SEGUIER’s Library, rich in polygto MSS. is to be catalogued. MABILLON has sent some not yet printed MSS. of St. Ambrose. The King is buying CARRERA marble, to make a square where now is the hostel VENDOME and another square near the Petits Champs and to embellish Paris, and specially Versaille, Medals and rarities of all sorts are also being bought. A German has made a hempen cord of great strength for hoisting. All the talk in Paris is of amusements and building. The Librarian of the St. Victor’s Library would like to have a copy of the royal ordinance confirming the treaty between Bodley and the society of booksellers when B. began his library, to the effect that the booksellers should provide his library with a copy of every book they published. The Librarian of St. Victor’s Library had read this in a History of Oxford University issued in 1679. It interests him because the St. Victor Library cannot afford to buy books. (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Smith 46, f° 401-402).
