'Tho’ the medals are put in the hands of Trustees by Settlement, I can not perswade myself that the Earl of Pembroke of the time being debarred the use of them, or forbid having them at his house. It would be too great an absurdity, & a very silly & gross affront no man would, at least, put on himself; certainly I never meant it when the Settlement was made; pray talk to Mr Lamb about it. [He continues in a similar vein] ... I am more than ever assured myself that selling them for £10,000 and buying land with the money, & entailing it to the Family, would be a wise measure. ... En attendant, if the E. of P. of the time being is not thought worthy to be entrusted with them in his own house, I will fairly own to you that I think the E. of P. will be a very mean silly fellow ...'
