Lettre du 10 février 1756 (de Rome) : « L’auteur du Musaeum Capitolinum est monsignor Bottari, un des préfets de la bibliothèque du Vatican, que je connais beaucoup, que je vois assez souvent, et qui jouit au plus vaste savoir, un jugement exquis de la critique la plus judicieuse. C’est un très grand travailleur qui voit de sang-froid, et qui, suivant moi, traite les antiquités avec un grand sens. Il travaille actuel/lement au quatrième volume qui contiendra les bas-reliefs » (Sérieys 1801, lettre n° XV, p. 95-96).
