Lettre du 31 mars 1758 (de Naples) : «Das A hat zwar auf den sehr alten silbernen Münzen der Stadt Kaulos (réf. au cabinet du duc de Noia) in Grossgriechenland, auf welchen nur die eine Zeite, und zwar hohl geprägt ist, fast eben di Gestalt; den auf einigne stehet kavlo; auf andern ist A umgefehrt, ΚΑΥΛΟ; auf Münzen von Metapont in Grossgriechenland ist es eben so gezogen: ΜΕΤΑ: aber die oben hervorhergehende Linie machet den Unterschied, und scheint die neue Forme anzuzeigen ... Den diese Legend an dem Berge Vesuvius ist nach der Verschüttung des Herculanum nicht öde geblieben, sondern bewohnet worden : wie aus spätern Münzen und nahmentlich aus einem Hadrian in Gold, welche in dem unterirrdischen Herculanum gefunden sind, zu beweisen ist» (version allemande de la même lettre en italien à Bianconi [voir n° 212: qui ne reprend toutefois pas la mention de la cité de Métaponte et la référence à la collection du duc de Noia])(Rehm I 1952, n° 207, p. 343 ; Callataÿ 2007, p. 593).
