Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

-Letter of 15 May 1648 (from Rome to Milan): "Nummis antiquis onustum ad tuos te redire gaudeo: ita non solum praecellentiam sed et instrumenta eruditionis perdit Italia. Habebunt enim nostri homines, quo semidoctorum antiquariorum fastum retundant. Prostat hîc magna numismatum supellex, studio impensaque incredibili conquisita a Cardinali Boncompagno. Sed emptorem vix inveniet Romae aut alibi per Italiam." (I am very pleased that you have returned to yours, weighed down with ancient coins: thus Italy loses not only its pre-eminence but also the tools of scholarship. For our men will have the means to blunt the arrogance of semi-learned antiquarians. A great collection of coins is offered here, collected by the enthusiasm and expenditure of Cardianal Buoncompagni. But he will hardly find a buyer in Rome or anywhere in Italy) (P. Burmann, Sylloge Epistolarum A Viris Illustribus Scriptarum, V (1727), Epistola CCCLXXVII, pp. 434-6)
