Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

-Letter of 31 March 1648 (from Padua): "In nummis antiquis comparandis felicior longe fui. Et dubito an quisquam in Hollandia sit, qui certare hic mecum possit. De argenteis loquor. Aureos habeo aliquot supra centum. Quos tamen coactus emi; cum existimem privati hominis fortunas, et praesertim meas, non ferre, ut hisce deliciis se oblectet. Sunt tamen rari plerique et elegantes, ut expensarum paenitere me non debeat." (I have been much more fortunate in buying ancient coins. And I doubt whether there is anyone else in Holland who can compete with me. I am speaking about the silver coins. I have something over a hundred gold ones. But I was forced to buy them, even though I think that the means of a private person, and especially me, are not sufficient to enjoy such fine things. But most are rare and fine, so that I should not regret the expense) (J.A.H. Bots (ed.), Correspondance de Jacques Dupuy et de Nicolas Heinsius (1646-1656) (Hague, 1971), pp. 34-37, Letter XIII, at p. 36)

RemarksRemarks regarding the annotation. (fr)

One would have expected this letter to date from after his final acquisition of the Passignano gold, but the year is clearly 1648, as can be seen on the digitised version of the letter: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b10035094t/f92. Presumably Heinsius was anticipating the completion of the purchase. (fr)
