Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

-Letter of 31 August 1649 (from Leiden to Deventer): "Quo magis doleo Amstelodamum me nunc evocari, trahunt me eo necessaria quaedam negotia; quod intellexerim Neapolitanum mercatorem, cui nummos veteres librosque in Hollandiam mittendos commiseram, ex ea urbe discessurus, re fracta foro cessisse. Quod superest, tentandum mihi, si quid forte tabularum ex isto naufragio colligi possit. Intra dies paucos revertar." (I am all the more sorry that Amsterdam now summons me and some unavoidable business takes me there, namely that I have learnt that the trader from Naples, to whom I entrusted the sending of the old coins and books to Holland, will be departing from that city, and the business will be broken off and fail. It is only left for me to try and see if any planks can be gathered from the shipwreck) (P. Burmann, Sylloges Epistolarum A Viris Illustribus Scriptarum, III (1727), Epistola CLXXVII, pp. 222-3)
