Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

-Letter of 1 July 1651 (from Amsterdam to Deventer): "Ad Smithium [staurogram: he died on 30 May 1651] μακαρίτην nuperrime Catalogum manuscriptum satis ingentem miseram nummorum veterum, qui in Italia venales sunt: eum ut mecum feram oportet, nec video, quo pacto ab haeredibus impetrari possit, qui nullum ex iis notum habeo." (I sent to the very recently deceased late Smetius the - big enough - manuscript catalogue of the ancient coins which are for sale in Italy. I ought to get it back with me, but I don’t see how it can be asked for from his heirs, none of whom I know) (P. Burmann, Sylloge Epistolarum A Viris Illustribus Scriptarum, III (1727), Epistola CCXXI, pp. 269-72, at 271).
