-Letter of 21 Dec. 1647 (from Padua to Nijmegen^: "[p. 28] De nummis Florentinis responsum necdum accepi. Unum emptioni obest: ingens nempe numerus nummorum aureorum. Centum enim et decem illic exstant. Velit autem venditor trientem sibi persolvi supra ipsum pondus pro antiquitate. Sic pro nummo, qui scutatos quatuor aequat suo pondere, sex scutati persolvendi essent; quod immane pretium est. Pro argenteis aequiora postulat. Si persistit in proposito, nihil efficietur a me. Ita enim judicant amici rerum harum periti iniquissimam esse hanc conditionem." (I have not yet received an answer about the Florence coins. One thing hinders the purchase: the really enormous number of gold coins. There are 110 there. The seller would wish that he should be paid a third more than their weight for their antiquity. So, for a coin which is the same as four scudi by weight, six scudi must be paid; this is a huge price. He asks more reasonably for the silver. If he sticks to his position, nothing will be done by me, since friends who are experienced in these matters judge this to be a very unfair condition) (G.
