Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

'Numos antiquos Anglo-Saxonum & Regum vestrorum sigilla accepi lubens, eoque nomine & tibi & nobilissimo D. Cottono grates habes gratissimas: opus sane accuratum & vobis dignum. ... Aveo videre Historiam Anglicam, cum illis nummis & sigillis tam eleganter & curiose delineatis: sed vereor ne Anglice scripta nullo usui mihi esse possit: vestram enim linguam penitus ignoro.' (Smith 1691, p. 263, letter 205; Burnett 2020b, pp. 150, 1173 n. 115)

['I have received with pleasure the ancient coins of the Anglo-Saxons and the seals of your Kings, and on that account I am extremely grateful to you and the most noble Mr Cotton: it is a really accurate work, one worthy of you ... I yearn to see the English History, with those coins and seals so elegantly and carefully drawn: but I am afraid that as it is written in English it can be no use to me: for I am completely ignorant of your language' (translation from Burnett 2020b, p. 150, n. 24)].
