Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

Lettre du 2 mai 1758 (de North Bierley, Yorkshire): He tells him that Sir H. Sloane’s «vast collection of natural curiosities was deposited in Montagu House, now called the British Museum». He speaks of his well furnished green and hot house, with American plants recently added; of the acquisition «by gift of a «hortus siccus» strong in sea plants and mosses; his Greek and Roman English coins: cameos: and relics from Herculaneum. He most gratefully will accept the generous offer which the writer had addressed to his father, if J. will accept his assurances that these favours will be treated by the son in the same spirit as the father would have shown. (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Radcliffe Trust c. 12 fols. 34, 35).
