'Incidi vero in magnam vim nummorum antiquorum, Et en duos tibi mitto non aureos, sed aereos, qui et rarioris et melioris notae mihi videbantur. Alter Constantinopolis, alter Romae prae se fert imaginem; non qualem tu nobis ex nummis Consularibus exhibuisti, nam posteriorum hos crediderim Impp.' (Hessels 1887, pp. 181-3, no. 78)

['I encountered a large quantity of ancient coins, and I send you two of them, not of gold, but of brass, which seem to me more rare and more worthy of attention. One bears the image of Constantinople, the other that of Roma: not the same as on the Republican coins you have shown me, since I would believe that these are of later emperors.'
