-Lettre du 14 août 1655 (de Rome à Ferrara) : « La medesima cagione m’ha fatto negligente a procacciarvi le medaglie. M. Stefano del Bufalo m’ha promesso alcuna di quelle che domandate, ma non ho fino a ora avuto tempo d’andare a trovarlo a casa. Lo faro a ogni modo. Ma io non vorrei cbe voi pensaste che qui se ne faccia la ricolta, come de’ lupini. Dico così, perche ognuno se le tiene srette il più che può: pure vi ajuteremo tutti a farne un conserto. Io ho paura che quell' amico me l'abbia calata d'un Vitellio, e di certe altre che non ritrovo. Da che egli le razzolò, non l’ha vedute niun' altro. Io ho piacer che l'abbia fatto ; ma, per non entrare in altri sospetti, vorrei che glifaceste confessare il cacio da galantuomo ; perche glielo perdono volentieri, come vizio virtuoso. Tanto più che ha mostro di non essere un gosso, a non attaccarsi alle più cattive. Non vi potrei dire, quanto contento ho preso risentire che’l Pigna vi ha tolto in protezione: perché, se ben non lo conasco di vista, è persona che si è fatto conoscere da ognuno : e dagli suoi scritti ritraggo che sia dotto, e studioso molto » (Caro 1725, lettre 49, p. 80-81).
