-Lettre du 28 février 1786 (de Den Haag) : « Je vous supplie, n’oubliez pas de feuilleter tous vos auteurs numismatiques où il s’agit de medailles grecques comme Goltzius, Paruta, Liebe etc. et regardez bien chaque medaille où vous trouverez une urne ou vase quelconque, surtout celles où vous trouverez un hibou avec, et dites si à la fin vous avez fait une reflexion. Pendant cette recherche je vous prie de ne pas regarder le livre du Comte de Caylus. C’etoit un homme exellent par son ardeur pour les arts, par le bien qu’il a fait, par les lumieres qu’il a repandues sur les arts mecaniques etc. etc. mais soit dit absolument entre nous, qui manquoit absolument de tact dans ses jugements sur les Anciens; defaut presque commun à tous les antiquaires, ce qui est curieux, mais je pourrois prouver ce que je dis, et donner raison peut-être de cette singularité ».
