Lettre du 23 mars 1538 (de Rome, à Florence): "Il Libro non s'è ancor veduto, nè manco il vetturale che lo portò; essendo costì, rinvenitelo voi. L'interpretazione della medaglia, che si desiderava dal Maffeo, è questa: Che gli Egizzj, volendo significare un'uomo d'alti pensieri, e volto alla contemplazione delle cose celesti, facevano un'Elefante col grugno rivolto in suso; e volendo significar la prudenza nelle cose del mondo, figuravano un Serpente: e questo è il significato del dritto, per dinotare lo spirito, e la sagacità di Cesare; e credo che la medaglia fosse coniata quando egli fu Pontefice Massimo: e per questo nel rovescio sono le quattro insegne pontificie, ed augurali, ma sono sì mal ritratte, che appena si possono conoscere. Quella di mezzo è la secure, o 'I malleo, o la secespita, che se la chiamassero, con che ammazzavano le vittime. Quello che pare un pesce polpo, è l'albogalero. Quella che simiglia a una sferza, è l’aspersorio: e quell’altro, a uso di scomberello, è l’haustorio" (Caro 1725a, lettre n° 18, p. 23; Castellani 1907, p. 316-317).
