Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

27 Nov. 1736 (from Paris): “Monsieur, un grand mal de jambe, qui m’a tenu au lit pendant près d’un mois, m’a empêché de répondre plutôt à votre lettre du 31 octobre, et de vous dire mon sentiment sur la petite médaille d’or que vous m’avez envoyée et que je vous renvoie. L’inscription est en arabe et sans aucune tête ni image, ce qui fait juger qu’elle est de quelque calife ou prince arabe ou persan du huitième ou du neuvième siècle. Les Mahométans ne mettaient jamais d’image sur leurs monnaies ou médailles. Charlemagne qui résidait souvent à Aix-la-Chapelle et aux environs de Liège était en grande relation avec les princes arabes ou persans, comme j’ai remarqué dans sa vie, et cette pièce de monnaie pourrait bien avoir été rapportée là par quelqu’un de leurs ambassadeurs. Si vous voulez jeter les yeux sur la vie de Charlemagne, vous y verrez qu’il était en commerce avec les princes orientaux. Ma jambe va de mieux en mieux” (Capitaine 1855, no. 51).
