-Lettre du 5 sept. 1654 : fait part de son projet d’ouvrage et des plombs qui lui viennent de Dario Giusti : « Da principio io hebbi il pensiero di far stampare solo le medaglie del mio Studio e particolarmente le colonie, le greche, con li medaglioni delli qualli detto Studio è assai numeroso » (“… At first, I thought I would only engrave the coins in my collection and especially the Roman Provincial ones and the Medallions that are very abundant. Subsequently, upon the suggestion of several friends - especially Monsignor de Massimi and Lucas Holstenius - I decided to have also the most varied selection of Roman sestertii, dupondii and asses engraved. Moreover, I also decided to have engraved those with significant subjects and those deserving further examination as other scholars had discussed them. Moreover, as it was too restrictive to print only my own coins, I also decided to publish the lead casts made from the originals that I had seen”) ; le livre incluerait aussi « le piu rare e quelle che o per historie o perché diversamente le havesse fatte stampare o interpretare altro autore e percio bisognasse parlarne o perché si giudico che fosse un troppo restringente non far stampare altro che le proprie medaglie, si stabili che dovesi far stampare anco quei piombi, de’ quali havessi io veduti gli originali antichi e comenciai io ad eseguire » ; il relate l’histoire « di questi piombi… che 80 e più anni sono Dario Giusti … di medaglie, di quante gli ne capitava in mano di tutte se ne riteneva un piombo, credo per poter rinettare altra simile più francamente quando capitasse, continuo a far il medesimo Girolamo Giusti suo figlio et rinettator bravissimo (trovai che haveva fatto l’istesso di tutte quelle che haveva rinttato a me) et essendo morto nel 1625, compro tali piombi quel disgratiato di Merolla, dal padre del quale doppo la sua morte li comprai io, havendoli il detto Merolla accresciuti notabilmente, pensavo pero s’a Dio piacesse darmi vita e commodità di finir tal opera, nominaro in mano di chi si trovavano le medaglie antiche originali di ciascuno piombo ch’io facero stampare … et era il mio pensiero, ma da due anni in qua e per la morte di quel giovane e per le molte occupazioni piu gravi che ho l’ho intermezzo, con speranza e desiderio s’a Dio piaccia di finirlo » ; il explique ses déboires avec les graveurs : il avait d’abord consulté Pietro Testa, le graveur de Cassiano del Pozzo, trop cher pour ses moyens ; il s’était ensuite mis en affaire avec un jeune graveur français, bon acquafortiste, mais qui mourut en 1652 ; il a peut-être trouvé celui qui fera l’affaire « ho pero trovato un altro che la finiria bene, ma non essendo cosi franco come quello, non mi so accomodare a terminarla » (Pesaro, Biblioteca Olivierana, MS 76, SS. 115-116 voir Missere Fontana 2009, p. 133, note 37, p. 278, note 273; Molinari 2020).
