-Lettre du 21 août 1783 (de Den Haag) : « La Princesse se porte mieux. Le chevalier Hamilton est à Francfort. S’il vient à Cassel vous le verrez aparenment, et examinez alors bien ce qu’il a. J’ai eu ici un Baron Smit, envojé de Hesse Cassel à Francfort, homme aimable et des grands et routinés brocanteurs que j’ai jamais vu. Il voulut me vendre quelques centaines de medailles grecques en bronze. Jamais je n’ai vu de pareilles friponneries. Ceux qui ne sont pas versé dans l’art de la gravure, et dans la langue grecque en même temps, y doivent être pris necessairement. Je lui ai dit ma pensée sans sonner le mot de fripon, dont il me parut fort content. D’ailleurs cet homme me plut assez. En sortant de chez moi la derniere fois, il me dit qu’il s’adresseroit à Vosmaer. Comme Nagel voit cet animal à la Cour quelques fois, je lui dit chretiennement de le prevenir. Nagel remet ce message deux jours, et lorsqu’il vint le troisieme pour l’executer, le Vosmaer lui dit qu’helas il avoit deja tout achetté. Or ce tout ne valoit pas certainement le cuivre ».
