-Lettre du 2 février 1697 (de ?) : « M. Dron [chanoine de Saint-Thomas du Louvre, ami et correspondant de Thoynard] a eu un [sc. Gordien] Africain le Père en moyen bronze grec, Α Κ ΓΟΡΔΙΑ ΑΦ ΚΑΛΛΟ fort entier et où l'on reconnait la tête de cet empereur, au revers, la tête de Cybèle, ΕΔΕ ΜΗ ΟΣΠ. Cette médaille n'étant contestée de personne, vous pouvez juger de la joie de M. Dron puisque l'on n'a jamais vu de Gordien grec ni de moyen bronze [voir cependant dans Vaillant, Numismata Imperatorum, Augg. et caess. a populis... græce loquentibus, Amsterdam, 17002, p. 147, cinq monnaies grecques de Gordien Africain mais pas celle-là].
