Lettre du 16 septembre 1730 (de Dijon) : « J’ai reçu, Monsieur, la réponse de M. Demaizeaux et je vous en rends grâce. La question qu’il me fait sur les lettres de la médaille de Vabalathus n’est pas d’un homme versé en ces sortes de choses. Il y avait parmi les Romains de certaines lettres que l’usage avait consacré à signifier de certains mots. Mais cela était resserré à un fort petit nombre et ne tirait point à conséquence pour les autres. Cela ne s’apprend que par la routine. On peut néanmoins s’en instruire dans le gros livre de Sertorius Ursatus, De notis Romanorum » (Duraton 1984, p. 45-46, lettre n° 401 = Weil, n° 1115).
