12 Apr. 1577 (from Brussels): “Molto reverendo signor mio osservandissimo. Le miserie di questi nostri infelicissimi paesi et li continoi travagli, che ho per aiutar la pace tanto desiderata, non mi lasciano pensar a alcuna sorte di studii, stando già quasi quattro mesi fuora di casa et senza libri; questo mentre però un gentilhuomo amico mio, tornato di Constantinopoli, dove è stato ambassiatore de l’imperatore Massemiliano, mi ha donato XI medaglie d’argento greche, sei grandi et le altre piccole, insieme alcune di bronzo tutte assai belle. Et trovandomi alli giorni passati in Anversa, un altro amico mio potughese mi ha fatto presente di tre medaglie rarissime d’argento venute d’Africa assai intere, l’une con une effigie diademata al vivo REX PTOLEMA..., et per rovescio una palme, asscriptum PAX, l’altro con una effigie d’huomo REX IVBA, et per rovescio una effigie di donna et REGIS IVBAE; la terza con una testa d’huomo pur d’un altra foggia con litere REX IVBA, et il rovescio CIIC con un sistro et un vaso con una spica et non so che altre cose. Le quali tre medaglie tnato più amo, che mi servono per l’historia di qul Juba consobrino di Cajo Cesare, come lo chiama Suetonio nella vita di Caligula. V. S. mi farà piacere di scriver ciò che havrà notato sopra di questo, perchè non è stato ancora dato principio alla stampa del mio Suetonio per li cattivi tempi et la miseria d’Anversa. Ho hauta ancora un altra consolare con una testa di Venere come par et Q. CASSIVS, per rovescio una vittoria sur (sic) la man dritta et una cornucopia; nell’ altra C. VIBIVS VARVS. Hoggi ancora trovandomi a desinare con l’ambassiator d’Inghliterra, ho inteso che a un luogho vicino a Loudin son trovate due urne con varie medaglie d’oro et argento massime di Claudie imperatore, et mi ha data speranza di farne haver alcune. V. S. di gratia non si dismentighi (sic) di me et mandi quelle XI medaglie, promettendoli che tra tante affitttioni mi darano la vita. Piace a Dio che Anversa tornasse in quel suo fiore di fortuna, et non mancheria materia per dilettarsi et ajutar la co gnitione della antichità, illustrata da V.
