-Le 13 juillet 1784 (de Den Haag) : « Je ne veux pas finir sans vous communiquer une anecdôte de dactylologie qui vous fera de la peine. Il y a ici Mylord Egerton, fils d’archeveque, neveu de notre feu ami Rhoon, lui ressemblant beaucoup, très riche, ayant beaucoup et bien vojagé, et l’un des plus reëls et solides connoisseurs en pierres gravées etc. que j’ai jamais vu. Jugez si je l’aime! Il m’a dit que le Diomede du Duc de Devonshire n’existe plus dans la nature. Je m’en etois deja douté sans avoir ôsé le dire, lorsque Miladdy Spencer vous envoia les empreintes des pierres de son beaufils. Je connoissois tellement cette merveille par tant de souffres et de pâtes que j’en avois eu, et je ne la reconnus plus dans l’empreinte de Mad. Spencer. Je suis persuadé à present que Hamilton n’a jamais vu cette pierre incomparable.
