Je vous renvoie les papiers, que vous m’avez confiz en partant d’icy: j’en ay pris une copie, et je suis fort aise d’avoir ces informations de Mr. le Docteur Bon, pour m’en pouvoir servir, quand j’auray le bonheur de rencontrer quelque part des medailles anciennes. Mr. le Consul Calkberner me mande d’Aleppo, que quelques gentilhommes Anglois ont eu la curiosité de voir les ruines de l’ancienne ville Palmyra. [Discussion of Palmyra’s names]
Elle a esté une colonie Romaine, et l’on trouve sur une medaille de Caracalla, COL PALMYRA; et je crois que l’Empereur Adrien pourroit bien estre cause de cette prerogative.... [discussion of cities named after Hadrian, citing coins from Tristan and Hardouin. Goes on to discuss the visit of the Englishmen, and how they had found many tombs and inscriptions; and how they were accompanied by a painter who had drawn everything.
