I gave \you/ trouble of showing me your Coins, for which I thanke you. …
Stephen Tempest of Kellbrooke within a mile of Earby lately found some old coin, as he was sealing mole hills in a cleft there.
At Broom in Cumberland many Coines were found and one Sam: King belonging to y^e Countesse has got of y^m by him. …
[added at bottom] I hear y^t at Gainsborough many coins were found in a sand hill the last yeare; amongst which was a very fair one of Severus in Silver.'

The letter is addressed simply to 'Mr Thiresby at his house in Leedes', and it is not clear whether this refers to John Thoresby or his son Ralph. EMLO and Roos 2016 both give the recipient at Ralph, but Wykes 2016 suggests John. Burnett 2020b, p. 711 accepts Wykes suggestion, noting that Ralph is not known to have had much interest in numismatic matters until the early 1680s. (en)
