'With the Duke of Devonshire, to speak to him concerning the collection of coins of the late eminent Antiquarie Mr. Ralph Thoresby of Leeds, now on view for sale. Told the Duke, that I would not bid, directly nor indirectly, for a single lot of these coins. Shewed him, in the ‘Ducatus Leodicensis’, many, & very rare coins, which are proper for his Cabinet. Took the above resolution, to thwart my Disposition, which inclines at present too much to Virtù of this sort; and to shew civility to the Duke, which, as expected, was not felt by him. That resolution the more mortifying as the Collection is in point to my own, and such a one as, it is probable, will never again be offered on sale, in my time.' (Burnett 2020b, p. 1645)
